The Berlin born DJ mixes mid-east melodies with European techno to extraordinary effect.
Soul Pistols is the pseudonym of Marcel Lehnert, one of Germany’s most forward thinking electronic musicians. After starting out playing in tiny clubs as a teenager, he has gone on to perform in every major city in the country, building a reputation as a magnetic performer with a gifted ear for melody and rhythm. His newest release, the four track EP “Arabian Nights,” showcases everything that makes him such a special talent; his unique ability to blend organic and electronic instruments, willingness to explore exotic sounds, and a restlessly creative spirit.On the opening title track, listeners are drawn into a dark brooding world, with a beat that is sparse yet propulsive. Hypnotic melodies float in and out of the mix before guest vocalist Christina Pol is introduced, bringing the track to a whole new level. Soul Pistols picks up the pace with the driving beat of “Kundas Dreams,” before launching into album highlight “Univibe,” an avant garde mash up of crooked rhythms and soaring melodies that evokes the feeling of looking up at an endless desert sky. Closing strong with the African influenced “Kotze Im Eimer,” the EP is solid from beginning to end, rewarding constant re-listens. With “Arabic Nights,” Soul Pistols solidifies his reputation as one of the most exciting DJ’s working today.
